We hope that you can promote our work by donating money, either by standing order or as single donation.

Moving Mountains has charitable status under UK law so therefore we request that UK taxpayers tick the box for Gift Aid which enables us to claim the tax on every donation. Regrettably Moving Mountains is not registered in the Republic of Ireland so therefore Gift Aid is not yet an option for Irish supporters.

There are different ways of assisting Moving Mountains:

1) A financial donation (one-off gift or Euro, Sterling standing order). This money will enable us to run our monthly operations which covers childrens education, feeding programmes, the two orphanages, medical support, family support, college fees and vocational training, Black Cats sports teams and rescue centers. For 2008 this currently costs the charity in the region of £5000 per month and is the mainstay of all our work.

2) Raise money for a specific item on our 'wish list'. Please see the list on this section of the site and make your choice depending on your interest and budget. We will update the page showing that you have bought the particular item and ensure the beneficiary is aware of who is the donor. This page will be updated regularly.

3) Raise money for a particular project and, if you wish, come out to Kenya and help to facilitate it. The list on this site will show a brief description, broad cost and details on the idea. This is open to individuals (small projects) and any size of group. Payment for any trip costs will be kept completely seperate to any donation made to Moving Mountains.

Note: Moving Mountains has a policy to keep 40% of any project donation for its monthly costs. We understand people want to build something, but we have a commitment to real people aswell which means we need to maintain our monthly outlay.
Eg: for a donation of £5000, £2000 will go towards our general fund and £3000 will go to the project itself.

4) Doing a teaching or medical placement through Adventure Alternative in Kenya, or a Community placement in Nepal. Part of your trip fee will include a donation to the institution itself.
For example if you choose to teach in Kenya for a three month term then the cost to you will be £1850.00, but 15% of this fee goes directly to the school as a donation.
Similarly, because AA supports the overheads of Moving Mountains, a further percentage of any trip fee goes towards charity.

5) Go on our of our fundraising trips to climb Mount Kenya or trek to the villages of Bumburi and Bupsa in Nepal. Details will be on the News Page. We have a condition that you pay for the cost of the trip yourself, and any money raised by sponsorship for the charity will only go to Moving Mountains.

Some Do's and Don'ts

We do love people to simply come out and see the work that we do, and perhaps combine their visit with a safari or a trek or just a relaxing holiday. We can provide the whole itinerary for you.

Do spend a few days at the orphanage and experience the wonderful life there. We will ask that you make a donation for your food (this will depend on the number of days you intend to stay) and to the Ulamba Development Fund (£100 per person). This Fund is set up for the local Committee to use as they see fit for the continued local development of the orphanage without the input of Moving Mountains. It is important that the locals have some autonomy.

We don't like people to just come out with pocketfuls of cash and start spending, just to satisfy a desire to buy things for 'poor' people. It goes against our philosophy of 'clever spending' and it gives completely the wrong impression to our beneficiaries who are used to having to 'work a bit' to get some money from the charity. Quite often this has involved years of building up trust and understanding.

We do love people to come out and get to meet the children and involve themselves with the charity, as long as it is understood that it is the charity which has the commitment to provide assistance, and not the donor. The donor is enabling the charity to do it's job. Often we find that by giving people the freedom to 'get involved', donors see this as an invitation to simply do what they want. This has on occasion led to serious implications for the reputation of Moving Mountains and to the ethos of our work. We therefore ask that visiting donors do not start making their own agenda and confusing the aims of the charity.

We don't allow visitors or clients or volunteers to decide which children to support or which projects to undertake. We are happy to take on board suggestions and ideas but these will be tabled at both MM and MMK meetings in the light of our long term aims and priorities. Similarly we do not allow visitors to implement projects which have not been sanctioned by both the charity and the NGO.
