Moving Mountains Identity and Role in Developing Countries
Moving Mountains is an independent Northern Irish organisation, accepted as a charity by the Inland Revenue under ref XR62512 with a board of 6 trustees.
In Kenya we have set up a charity, called 'Moving Mountains Kenya', registered by the NGO Council of Kenya, which carries out the work of the Trust. 'MMK' has been running for three years and is an integral part of our operation.

'Moving Mountains Trust' and 'Moving Mountains Kenya' have both of their administrative costs covered by Adventure Alternative (MD, Gavin Bate), thus enabling around 96% of all funds donated to be given to the beneficiaries. This is a fundamental part of the ethos for the charity when it was set up.
Moving Mountains works alongside local communities in developing countries to help the community respond to its own real needs. Programmes like education, medical assistance and self-help projects may take years to complete. Throughout that time, programmes/projects are continually monitored and evaluated to ensure they are addressing the changing needs of the community, and that the funds are being administered well.

Education
Possibly the best chance of empowering children and young people, enabling them to change their lives for the better, is to provide them with the basic elements of education. We take children alll the way through primary and econdary education and into college or vocational opportunities. We provide funding for all their needs during this time and we also assist the family in order to help sustain a normal family life during these years.
Employment
Having taken a child through school and often college, we then attempt to find gainful employment to promote self-sifficiency and the ability for young people to 'stand on their own two feet'. Many of our beneficiaries are employed by the charity itself or by Adventure Alternative, thus maintaining the circle of friendship they had from being on the streets or in the slums together.
Medical
Moving Mountains helps improve basic medical/health services by providing continuing financial assistance to clinics in order they can purchase necessary medication and equipment, and by providing salaries for qualified medical staff. We supply equipment, drugs and free medical care for all the beneficiaries in our programme. We renovate and build clinics too, working with the community on deciding specific needs eg HIV/AIDS centres.
Projects
We carry out many renovation and building projects around the country, working on long term plans to enable institutions to become self-sufficient through a system of initial capital investment followed by drip-feed revenue. We support and build many schools, orphanages, rescue centres, clinics, hospitals and villages in this way. Often the projects are developed over many years to build trust and a sense of concerted effort between all parties.
Some of our projects promote business and revenue for communities and villages eg the hydro electric plant in Nepal, and educate people to a better, healthier, and 'greener' way of life.
The projects themselves are now carried out by teams of trained youngsters who once came from the streets, thus enabling the charity to provide education, support and eventually an income.
Financial Assistance
We help through providing money to parents and families of needy children who we assist in education. This encourages families to stay together, strengthening the local community. The children remain in an environment in which they feel comfortable and can continue their education without disruption. The strength of the programme relies heavily on Moving Mountains creating a stronger bond between child, mother and school. In effect it brokers an agreement between all three, so that the child can be seen as potential for the future rather than a liability for the present. The intention is to fix systemic problems within the family unit or school scenario with clever and small injections of money. THe long term intention is to build a foundation from which the ripple effect will change the future forever. An educated, informed child, in time, becomes an employable adult, who in turn can look after his or her family and break out of the poverty cycle.
